AFI AWARDS 2009 –WINNERS
TWO UNIQUE HEROIC JOURNEYS RECOGNISED
The AFI voters chose Samson & Delilah and the public* voted for Mao’s Last
Dancer in this year’s crowded AFI Awards, the former recognising a unique
cinematic work, the latter confirming significant popular satisfaction – both
films reflecting two very different heroic journeys.
Samson & Delilah also won awards for screenplay and direction, and its newcomer
leads won the Young Actor Award, a more fitting honour than its grown up
counterparts, which were won by Anthony LaPaglia (Balibo) and Frances O’Connor
(Blessed). In the previously presented industry awards (see below) Samson &
Delilah also won awards, including cinematography for Warwick Thornton, who now
has claim to be the most awarded debuting filmmaker in Australian history.
In the award’s 25th year, Ray Brown, legendary Key Grip was honoured with the
Byron Kennedy Award, which is presented for outstanding creative enterprise
within the film or television industry. The Byron Kennedy Award is given to an
individual whose quality of work embodies the qualities of Byron Kennedy:
innovation, vision and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Ray ‘Brownie’ Brown
is a legendary, larger than life crew member who has been a celebrated part of
the Australian film landscape for over 30 years. The Byron Kennedy Award is
presented by Kennedy Miller Mitchell, in association with the AFI, and includes
a cash prize of $10,000.
